The Lakehurst Hall
The Lakehurst hall is a historic, independent SRO (Single Room Occupancy) situated in the heart of Uptown Oakland. The building historically caters to disabled people and people transitioning out of homelessness. Because of it’s unique clientele, the Lakehurst is often at odds with the wealthier residents in the surrounding neighborhood. In the middle of a real-estate boom and housing crisis, the Lakehurst sits at odds with Bay Area Nimbyism. During the Covid Pandemic, I gained access and sat down with the owner, Tomoko to learn more about this unique space, and see if the Lakehurst could tell its own story.
